Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you beforejudgment seats? Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? James 2:6-7. 

 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full. . . Then thine heart be lifted up and thou forget the Lord thy God. Deut. 8:12, 14

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. Rev. 3:17 

It is a theme that runs throughout the Bible. Material riches can be a snare and spiritual danger. In contrast, material lack can be the breeding ground for spiritual abundance. The men and women who attend our Brown Bags and Jesus Lunches are able to receive readily from the Spirit of God. Scripture, spiritual songs, and prayers resonate in their spirits. They are vessels who know themselves to be empty, and therefore, they have no trouble being filled. Several of the people that we feed greet us each Sunday like an old friend. With hugs and smiles they reminded us that they have been eating with us since the start of Brown Bags and Jesus. We are touched by their smiles of anticipation. They have a sense of confidence that they are about to receive something good. They have that simple faith that the Father watches for in His little children, and that He rewards in all His children, young and old, poor and rich.

But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh uponme: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God. Psalm 40:17

. . . the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. Psalm 10:14

Those who participate in Brown Bags and Jesus are thankful to be extensions of God’s hands of mercy.He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor. Proverbs 14:31
